Islamabad, Pakistan – International Labour Day is being observed across Pakistan today, in solidarity with global commemorations, to honor the invaluable contributions of workers and to raise awareness about their rights.
The day is dedicated to acknowledging the tireless efforts, dedication, and sacrifices of the labour force, which plays an integral role in driving the nation’s progress and economic development. It also serves as a reminder of the need for fair treatment, social protection, and safe working conditions for all workers.
Leadership’s Commitment to Workers’ Welfare
In separate messages, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to the protection, empowerment, and welfare of workers, emphasizing their crucial role in the nation’s economic and social fabric.
President Zardari highlighted the importance of skill development to help workers and youth meet the evolving demands of the global job market. He called for greater collaboration between governments, private enterprises, educational institutions, and civil society to create a robust ecosystem for labour empowerment. He also paid tribute to workers as the “driving force†of the economy, stressing the need for inclusive development and policy reforms that respect all forms of labour, from manufacturing and agriculture to SMEs and the public sector.
In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised workers as the “real driving force†behind Pakistan’s resilience and progress. He emphasized that labour protections are not only a constitutional right but are also in alignment with international commitments under ILO conventions. The Prime Minister shared details of key government reforms, such as the ratification of international conventions, the National Occupational Safety and Health Profile, and the expansion of welfare institutions like EOBI and WWF. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to promote digitalisation and vocational training, particularly through NAVTTC and TEVTAs, with a special focus on youth and women.
A Unified Call for Action
Both leaders urged all stakeholders, including governments, employers, and unions, to work collaboratively towards creating a safe, dignified, and opportunity-rich environment for all workers, where they can thrive and contribute to the country’s continued growth.
Today’s observance of International Labour Day stands as a significant moment to reflect on the importance of workers and reaffirm the nation’s commitment to building a fairer and more inclusive future for all.
