World-renowned Spanish-Peruvian writer and Nobel Prize-winning author Mario Vargas Llosa has died at the age of 89.Mario Vargas Llosa is known for his revolutionary literary works, which provide in-depth analysis of themes such as dictatorship, freedom, and individual resistance.
His son Alvaro Vargas Llosa confirmed his father’s death in a statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), saying, “It is with great sadness that we announce that our father, Mario Vargas Llosa, passed away in Lima.”Vargas Llosa was born in 1936 in the southern Peruvian city of Arequipa.
He spent some of his childhood in Bolivia with his grandfather, who was the Peruvian consul there. He later studied at the National University of San Marcos in Lima. His first work was a play, La guía del Inca, published in 1952.He earned
a worldwide reputation as a journalist, broadcast host, and writer.He lived in Paris, London, Washington, and Barcelona and also taught at several universities.
Mario Vargas Llosa was active not only in the literary world but also in politics. In 1990, he ran as a presidential candidate for Peru, where he supported the ideology of classical liberalism, but was defeated in the second round by Alberto Fujimori.
He then obtained Spanish citizenship and in 1994 received Spain’s highest literary award, the Cervantes Prize.In 2010, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The Swedish Academy described his work as a map of power structures, a rich depiction of human resistance, rebellion, and defeat. Vargas Llosa will be remembered as the creator of several masterpiece novels.
