Iceland’s Social Democrats win election, unseating ruling coalition

COPENHAGEN: Iceland’s center-left Social Democratic Alliance became the largest party in a snap election that ended the past seven years of ruling coalition, final counts showed on Sunday. The Social Democrats, led by Kirsten Frostadotte, won 15 of the 63 seats. -Parliament seat with 20.8 percent of the vote, state broadcaster RUV reported. Frostadotte, 36, took over as party leader two years agoAnd he championed the Nordic welfare model, committed to tackling the cost-of-living crisis caused by high inflation and borrowing costs. The three ruling coalition parties – the Azadi Party, the left-wing Green Movement and the Progressive Party – were the biggest losers. However, the Freedom Party, led by Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson, came second with 19.4% of the vote.which won 14 seats after a late surge in support, while the Liberal Reform Party finished third on 15.8%. 11 seats. The left-wing Green Movement, led by Catherine Jacobus Duterte, who previously ran for president as prime minister in April, failed to win any seats.
