Washington (Global Reporter) — US President Donald Trump’s administration has temporarily halted Harvard University from admitting foreign students, increasing tensions between the university and the federal government.
According to a foreign news agency, the US Department of Homeland Security has revoked Harvard University’s certification of its student and visitor exchange program, meaning the university will no longer be able to admit new foreign students and current foreign students have been advised to change their institutions.
Secretary of Homeland Security Christine Noam told the university in a letter that the move was made in the context of an ongoing investigation. According to government sources, the decision was made after the university violated federal contracts and raised questions about academic standards.
On the other hand, Harvard University has strongly reacted to the move, calling the ban “illegal” and saying that it will harm not only the university but the entire country’s education system.
It should be noted that the Trump administration also began examining Harvard University’s federal funds in March, expressing concerns that the university had not taken effective measures to prevent anti-Semitic behavior on campus.
Despite the recent ban and criticism, Harvard University has rejected government pressure and insisted on maintaining its academic autonomy, which has increased tensions between the two.
