Google parent Alphabet jumps on quantum chip breakthrough

Shares of Google parent Alphabet rose nearly 5 percent on Tuesday after it unveiled a new-generation chip that the company said helped overcome a key challenge in quantum computing. Google on Monday introduced a new chip called Willow, which solves a computing problem in five minutes. A classical computer would take longer than the history of the universe. Tech companies are pursuing quantum computing in hopes of taking on traditional siliconperform much faster than conventional computers. The building blocks of quantum computers, called “qubits,” are fast but error-prone, making it difficult to ensure that quantum computers are reliable and commercially viable. In quantum computing, the more errors there are in general. But Google said on Monday that it has found a way to integrate qubits into the Willow chipthat the error rate decreases as the number of qubits increases, he added, adding that it can also correct errors in real time. “There will be big impacts in finance and it can drastically reduce mistakes and lead to breakthroughs and discoveries,” said Thomas Hayes, chairman and managing member of Great Hill Capital. Alphabet shares were on track for their best day yetFrom the end of April. As of Monday’s close, the stock has gained 25 percent so far this year. Earlier this year, Microsoft and quantum computing firm Quantinuum said they took a major step toward making quantum computers a commercial reality by making them more reliable.
