Good news for the public: Electricity likely to become cheaper, NEPRA to hold hearing tomorrow

Islamabad: There is good news for electricity consumers, as a clear reduction in electricity prices is being shown in terms of monthly and quarterly adjustments.

According to reports, under the monthly fuel price adjustment of March 2025, the price of electricity is expected to be reduced by 3 paisa per unit, while under the third quarterly adjustment of the financial year 2024-25, the price of electricity can be reduced by more than Rs 1 per unit.

In this regard, consumers are expected to get a total relief of Rs 51.49 billion. According to sources, an application has been submitted to NEPRA by the relevant institutions, in which a reduction of Rs 47.12 billion has been proposed in terms of capacity charges.

NEPRA will hold a hearing on these applications tomorrow. The petition states that a total of 8.409 billion units of electricity were generated in March, at a cost of Rs 9.22 per unit, while the reference cost was set at Rs 9.25 per unit.

If NEPRA approves these proposals, the public could get a major relief from the burden of inflation, which would be a very welcome move in the current economic conditions.
