The Scotland women’s cricket team in Pakistan for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup qualifiers also includes Maryam Faisal, granddaughter of former Pakistani Test cricketer, manager and selector Colonel (retd) Naushad.
19-year-old Maryam Faisal has represented Scotland in 1 ODI and 6 T20 matches.
Maryam Faisal said that my twin brother and I started playing cricket because of my grandfather. I affectionately called my grandfather Baba, and he supported me a lot.
He said that Baba was the manager of the Pakistan team in the series against Sri Lanka in Dubai. We went to watch it
and that’s where I became interested in cricket. Actually, I didn’t like cricket at all. I fell asleep during the match. When I returned, my brother joined the club and then I also started playing cricket.
Maryam Faisal said that when I flopped in the Under-19s, my father encouraged me and then I played well the next season.
My father never forced me and my brother to play cricket, he just wanted us to play sports. He said that it feels good to come and play in Pakistan, it is a different feeling because playing where you belong is a dream, so this dream of mine is coming true.
Maryam Faisal says that indigenous girls do not get involved in sports, perhaps because of family or because they are not interested in it themselves. I think indigenous girls should be told that they can go anywhere and do anything.
