Delhi CM Rekha Gupta attacked during open court, question mark on security

 

New Delhi: A sad and worrying incident took place in the Indian capital Delhi today, when a person attacked Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during an open court held at her residence. The incident has raised serious questions on the security arrangements.

According to Indian media, the attacker has been identified as Rajesh Sakaria, who is 40 years old and is said to be a resident of the state of Gujarat. Immediately after the attack, security personnel took timely action and took the attacker under control and detained him, while the investigation is underway.

Attack at a public meeting

According to eyewitnesses, the attacker approached the Chief Minister with some papers and suddenly attacked him while apparently expressing a complaint. The security team present at the spot immediately shifted the Chief Minister to the hospital, where no official statement has been made yet about his condition.

“This is a major security failure” — Police Commissioner

Describing the incident as a “major security failure”, Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh said that the incident will be investigated at the highest level. He added that the security of public representatives should be the top priority of the state and such incidents are unacceptable.

Political reaction

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Harish Khurana has strongly condemned the incident, saying that “this is a sad incident and a thorough investigation should be done to see if there is any political conspiracy behind it.”

Situation under surveillance

The state government and law enforcement agencies are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, while details regarding Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s health will be shared with the public soon.
