Babar Azam feeling ‘no pressure’ at ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on home soil

Pakistan will play their first ICC tournament on home soil since 1996 when they defend their Champions Trophy title later this year, with Babar Azam set to lead the charge.Babar, a key part of Pakistan’s 2017 title-winning squad, has since become one of the world’s top batters. Now 30 and ranked No. 1 in ODIs, he aims to guide his side to another triumph.”As a player, I am very excited, and all the fans are excited,” Babar said speaking to the ICC.”A lot has changed since 2017. We have new players coming in, and only three or four from that team remain. But the belief, confidence and execution are the same.”Pakistan enters the tournament amid a period of instability following coaching changes and early exits in the last two ICC events, including a group-stage elimination at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.Despite this, Babar remains focused. “There is no pressure. What has happened in the past is beyond us. We have discussed our mistakes and worked on them,” he said.”When you have responsibility as a senior player, and the team relies on you, I take it in a positive way.”Pakistan begin their campaign against New Zealand in Karachi and conclude the group stage against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.Their marquee clash against India will take place in Dubai on 23 February.”When you play at home, you get that edge as you know the conditions,” Babar said.”But you still have to play good cricket because all other teams are among the best. It means a lot to be hosting the competition.”
