ADB approves $200m loan for upgrading electricity transmission system

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $200 million loan to improve Pakistan’s electricity transmission system. According to a bank statement, the amount will be used to modernize the distribution system and increase the capacity of distribution companies (Discos) to provide sustainable electricity. In the initial phase three distribution companies LESCO (Lahore), MAPCO (Multan) and SEPCO (Sukkur) to supply power to their respective areas.Funds will be provided for capacity building. Under the project, more than 300,000 meters of modern metering infrastructure will be installed. Installation of data management and communication system is also part of this project. A monitoring system will be installed on more than 15,000 online transformers in the power supply companies of Lahore, Multan and Sukkur. The statement said that the voltage of four SEPCO grid stations will be doubled from 66kv to 132kv.This will help reduce transmission losses and meet the power demand. 25 grid stations will be constructed and modernized in Lahore. These stations will also be equipped with the latest equipment. 11kv feeders, which are suffering heavy losses, will be replaced with modern cables to reduce the financial losses.
