According to foreign media reports, dozens of people were killed in violent clashes between fans during a soccer match in Guinea’s second largest city, Nzérékoré, on Sunday. A doctor at the hospital described the scene as “catastrophic,” with the hospital overflowing with bodies and even the morgue, with nearly 100 bodies brought to the hospital and morgue, while another doctor confirmed dozens of casualties.. The Guinean government later issued a statement confirming 56 deaths in the incident. Videos circulating on social media purportedly show bodies around the stadium, but their authenticity has not been confirmed. Angry protesters also set Nzérékoré police station on fire. Eyewitness accounts revealed that the violence erupted after a controversial refereeing decision led to fans storming the pitch. A deadly quarrel.
